When he graduated, he was torn between wanting more
education and earning an income.
"My father convinced me to work at Mid-Continent," he
said. "He had purchased the company the year before, and
I started in customer service, then moved to purchasing and
However, he left Mid-Continent Instruments and Avionics
for a brief stint where he returned to Dallas to work for a
large mortgage banking company. He gravitated to the tech
side of the company and helped computerize the company's
operations. When he returned to Mid-Continent, that experience helped as the company became more computer savvy.
Eventually, Winter learned all the business and was named
president and chief executive officer in 2009.
Todd and Ellen have three sons. "They all have jobs and
are happy," he noted.
Winter remains an outdoorsman at heart, enjoying hunting, fishing, skiing, or "any excuse to be in interesting remote
places, off the grid. That's my No. 1 hobby."
Under his leadership, Mid-Continent Instruments and
Avionics has thrived. Now employing nearly 200 people, the
company serves customers in 57 countries with the ability to
overhaul nearly 6,000 different products. The company manufactures more than 20,000 units per year and processes more
than 15,000 units in its overhaul/exchange and repair operation, including gyros, altimeters, HSIs and autopilot systems.
As for the future, Winter has one goal - to continue
to grow the company while retaining its small-business
