A year ago at the NBAA Convention, Universal
Avionics introduced its InSight Integrated Flight
Deck. Once again, the company came to NBAA with
For starters, Universal unveiled the UniLink
Desktop Training Software for Future Air Navigation
System environment familiarization. The new
software, which allows operators to walk through a
series of scenarios simulating two-way messaging
using FANS technology, was on demonstration at the
company's booth in Las Vegas.

Control Panel provides nine different training
* ATC Log On: The basics of logging on to Air
* Oceanic Clearance: Requesting and receiving
an oceanic clearance from CYQX.
* North Atlantic Crossing: Normal North
Atlantic crossing from KFFL to EGGW.
* North Pacific Crossing: North Pacific crossing
from KOAK to RJTT with reroutes.
* Weather Deviation: Weather Deviation en route
from PHNL to KLAX.
* SatCom Loss: Loss of SatCom function en
route from KVNY to PHTO.
* ATC Voice Request: ATC voice communication
request en route from KLAS to PHTO.
* Emergency Operations: Declaring an
emergency en route from PHOG to KTUS.
* Free Flight: Allows undirected exploration of
UniLink FANS messaging.
Allowing for operator preference, the UniLink
Trainer simulates both the UniLink CMU, and a
4-inch or 5-inch FMS CDU or multifunctional CDU.
The company also introduced Software Control
Number 31.0, for the UniLink UL-800/801
Communications Management Unit. SCN 31.0 is
designed to provide UniLink UL-800/801 operators
with the necessary Controller-Pilot Data Link
Communications message sets to meet European
Link 2000+ Programme mandate requirements.

capability with a software upgrade (no hardware
In addition, Universal made its new Touch CDU app
for the Flight Management System Trainer desktop
software available for demonstration during the show.
Available for the iPad, the Touch CDU app acts as
a virtual Control Display Unit, which allows the
operator to interact with the FMST desktop software
program. Supporting FMST v1.0 and later, the app
includes 4-inch Flat Panel CDU, 5-inch FPCDU and
multifunctional display options. It provides all of
the interactive functionality of a physical FPCDU
including data entry, line select key selection,
and function key selection - without the expense
of purchasing the physical unit. According to the
company, it's a perfect complement to any in-house
training or familiarization program for Universal
As part of a special promotion, Universal Avionics
said it is offering incentives for the next Falcon
900B operator to have their aircraft upgraded with
the company's retrofit flight deck package. Available
through a partnership with Duncan Aviation, the
upgrade program includes FANS and ADS-B Out
capability. The one-time incentive is comprised of
an extended one-year warranty with the FlightAssure
Extended Warranty Program, for all Universal
Avionics products, saving an extended warranty cost
of approximately $15,000. The installation must be
contracted for installation at Duncan Aviation prior to
June 30, 2016.
And finally, there were some awards announced
in Las Vegas. Universal named Field Aviation as its
2015 Top Dealer North America, and Scandinavian
Avionics A/S as its 2015 Top Dealer International. q
