Addressing the business jet market,
"the number of aircraft have increased
significantly over the past five years,"
said Steve Elofson of Duncan Aviation's
avionics installation sales force. "In the
next five years, we remain positive and
see growth. Projections we follow show
there will be resurgence in manufacturing
in the U.S. We expect those companies
will do well and will invest in business
aircraft. We see this as a clear indicator of growth" in the retrofit market, he
continued. "We are so positive about the
future, we have decided to expand with a
full-service facility in Provo, Utah."
Before business aviation today are opportunities and challenges in three areas:
economic/financial, political/regulatory
and technology/equipment.

Given the state of the world, the global
and U.S. economy is the most unpredictable, especially when one factors in the
current political environment and activity.
Given the multitude of variables, both
economic and political, that determine
the environment in which we all must
exist, the crystal ball picture of the future
is turbulent and cloudy with an indistinct
path forward.
"Recessions come every 10 years
or so," Elofson said. "We don't expect
another Great Recession, but we know it
will be coming at some point in the near
future, and it will be a challenge for the
industry."
Demographics are a related variable
that determines the future of not only the
business community, but also aviation as
a whole. "Challenges we see in the next
five years include the retirement of (aviation's) baby boomer employees," Elofson
said. In all aspects, from manufacturing

of airframes and their components to the
technicians who install and maintain them, to
the crews that put them to work, "Hiring and
training their replacements is a concern."
Technology leads the list of aviation
opportunities. "Rapid advancements in
technology will solve many safety, airspace
and communications problems as the market
grows," said DeHerrera, adding that the first
steps are taking place in the retrofit market,
which have been slowly growing, driven
in part by mandates for ADS-B and FANS
requirements.
These rapid advancements "will drive
regulators to generate mandates ... and these
advancements will generate new pressures in
the marketplace, both in the forward-fit and
retrofit arenas to update existing avionics.
We are already seeing this with CPDLC
(Controller Pilot Data Link Communications) where avionics is solving the problem
with increased congestion in communications. We don't see these pressures changing
as more and more demand is being placed on
existing older technologies."
Agreeing that technology is a proven
bright spot in the aviation industry, "acceptance of STCs across the FAA, EASA and
other authorities continues to be a challenge," Elofson said. "True acceptance of
each other's STCs and bilateral agreements
is an opportunity for the industry." When this
challenge is surmounted, "advancements in
avionics technologies and implementation
of systems such as ADS-B, FANS-1A, and
high-speed data offer efficiencies and situational awareness that will certainly benefit
all within our industry."
Like the economy, the political and
regulatory outlook is a challenge. Full
implementation of the Next Generation Air
Transportation System will open the door to
business aviation operations when the FAA
installs GPS-LPV approach procedures
at the multitude of airports nationwide
that don't yet have them. But uncertain
long-term FAA funding and proposals to
privatize the air traffic control system will
slow the opening of this door, or open it
only a crack, which will limit access to select operations with the necessary financial
resources. As has always been the case,
access (either economic or operational) is
the key to success in aviation. q
