"The guy with the biggest data pipeline into his cabin
today is king. Pilots who just a year ago were saying
no-way to Wi-Fi are now saying their boss has to have
it - now. Why? Because passengers today really want it.
That's an upgrade that adds value to a private owner and
is a must for a Part 135 charter operator. You really can't
charter a jet that does not have Wi-Fi connectivity."
Harpster cautioned that while Wi-Fi can add
immediate value, putting in the wrong system might
well end up costing you down the road. Technology is
quickly changing.
"There are all kinds of solutions out there today," he
said. "Some are well proven. Some are new, and we're still
waiting to see how they work. I get questions every day, and
it's a challenge to give operators good advice. We just don't
know what tomorrow will bring as far as cabin connectivity
capabilities. If you're not going to gain an immediate
benefit today, then you may be better off waiting."

The owner just wants to be able to
continue to use his aircraft. Period.
Of course, sometimes an avionics upgrade is a
necessity simply to ensure an owner can keep the
aircraft in the air.
"We had a customer whose Falcon 900 was grounded
for three weeks because one of the aircraft's EFIS
symbol generators had failed and they could not find a
replacement in the U.S." Harpster said. "The unreliability
and lack of spare parts for legacy avionics are often
viable reasons to have a panel upgraded. An airplane with
old and unreliable avionics is of little value to anyone."
Jets aren't the only category of aircraft that have
issues with obsolete avionics hindering their overall
value proposition. Jeff Owen, vice president of piston
aircraft sales for Premier Aircraft Sales, said that older
Piper Meridian turboprops equipped with the Meggitt
Magic electronic flight instrument system suffer from
not only poor reliability, but also a difficult and costly
support path. In short, owners can't rely on them, and
buyers don't want them.
