"It's almost expected that one of these airplanes
will have (or need to have) a significant panel upgrade
now that more reliable equipment with better features
is available," he stated. "These upgrades can easily go
well over $100,000, and I would venture to guess that
virtually all of that cost could be recoverable compared
to an airplane that still has the original panel."
Cockpit systems aren't the only issues when it
comes to issues with obsolete or nonsupported systems.
Harpster said that Audio International's decision to exit
the in-flight entertainment business has left a lot of
aircraft owners/operators up the proverbial creek.
"Anyone with their (AI) products in their cabin is
faced with the problem of having to replace it all," he
said. "And it's not an easy fix. There are no direct slidein replacements so everything has to be re-installed
from the beginning. It turns into a whole interior
upgrade."
Harpster said it's typical with the larger cabin jets for
new owners to want a complete cabin retrofit when they
take delivery, so taking on a big upgrade like replacing

AI switches may not net enough gain to be worth the
immediate effort and cost.
"Every operator has to look at their situation and then
determine how that upgrade will impact their immediate
operations," he said. "Some things are just better left
for the next owner to deal with."
For sale: The investment upside of
avionics upgrades.
This is the $100,000 avionics question: If I add
avionics today, will I get my money back next year?
"There is no absolute certainty that the value of the
avionics installation can be fully recovered on the sale
of the airplane," Owen said. "So it makes no logical
sense to spend anything if you're not going to enjoy the
benefits yourself.
"That being said, some sensible, minimal upgrades
to an older panel - like adding ADS-B or a WAAS GPS
- is almost expected in any airplane these days. If they
