don't have them, they will probably be the last to sell
and not bring a great price considering that the buyer
will have to do those types of upgrades themselves."
Again, it all depends on what the aircraft's current
owner is trying to accomplish. If he or she only
wants to dress the airplane up in preparation for its
impending sale, then an avionics upgrade - beyond the
obvious - is probably not the best place to put their
money.
As one well-known aircraft sales representative said,
"Let the next owner spec out their panel to fit their
type of flying. It's better to ask a lower price for your
airplane and get it sold quickly than have it sitting
around waiting for some other issue to crop up."
The price is right - or not.
Suppose a shop's prospective customer can justify
the cost of an avionics upgrade. How much should
they spend? Yikes, yet another loaded question.
"For years, the general rule-of-thumb used to be

that upgrades were normally about 10 percent of the
hull value of the airplane," Harpster said. "Today, we
are seeing that raised to 20 to 25 percent depending
on the type and age of the aircraft.
"The capabilities found in today's aftermarket
avionics make it more viable to spend more on
upgrades - again, if the owner is going to use them.
Capabilities like FANS, CPDLC, ADS-B, synthetic
vision, TAWS and high-speed connectivity enable you
to upgrade a 10-year old airplane with the capabilities
of a brand new model. That is value you can enjoy
today and again when you sell the airplane in two or
three years."
But again, don't go overboard.
"It's not hard to spend 25 to 75 percent of an older
airplane's value on a top-end avionics upgrade,"
Owen said. "Your true ROI has to be measured more
on the aspect of improved safety, functionality and
reliability rather than money.
"Airplanes and avionics are not investments.
They are mobile equipment that depreciate with age
and use, so trying to realize a dollar return on your
investment is wrong thinking."
