Another "wrong way" to spend money on an
upgrade is to try and do it on the cheap. In other
words, cobbling together a one-off panel built
from equipment the owner has scrounged up on the
internet.
"If possible, don't drift too far away from the
industry norm as far as your panel's configuration
goes by trying to mix and match a variety of
components," Harpster said. "An installation like
that may seem cost-effective today, but it can be very
difficult for another avionics shop to troubleshoot,
and this turns into added downtime and added costs.
"Sometimes, the least expensive solution looks
good on the front end, but can become a real
challenge and problem down the road. So not every
upgrade is a good upgrade."

Answering the 'added value' question
If you stayed with us this long, you realize what

"added value" question. As Harpster said, "Avionics
value is in the eye of the beholder."

approach an avionics upgrade, or any upgrade for that
matter?
As one well-known aircraft broker said, "My
recommendation to anyone considering any kind of
upgrade to their airplane is to put their money into
whatever will increase their overall joy of ownership and
use of the airplane. It's folly to try and anticipate what the
next owner will want. So anything that encourages you to
use your airplane more is the best way to ensure the best
return on investment you can possibly make." q
