and get to learn something new
every day."
With 50 years in the business,
avionics aren't the only things
Farrar has seen change.
"I got my commercial,
instrument and multiengine
ratings back in the 1960s," he
said. "I never kept up with my
hours, but I know I had over
1,500 hours a long time ago.
That's what you needed to qualify.
Back in the old days, if you
had 1,500 hours, you could be
named on the company insurance
policy, which meant you could
fly anything you could get in. Not
like today.
"Once your name was on the
policy and if the airplane was
under 12,500 pounds, you could
go fly it. It was all fair game. We
never had check rides. We got a
new airplane in here and would
just go fly it. They all worked the
same."
Along with flying a variety of
company planes, Farrar also has
owned an Aeronca Champ and
a couple of 172s. He also built
a PDQ and an ultralight. "That
thing (ultralight) would hurt you,"
he said.
Farrar's words of advice
With more than 50 years under
his avionics tool belt, Farrar has
no plans of slowing down, but he
does have some sage advice for
the next generation of techs.
"My best bit of advice is to go
out there and get into the business
as soon as you can," he said. "Get
a job with a good shop and learn
