"In aviation, pilots and flight department managers tend not
to be proactive. They are afraid that the person in the back of
the airplane is going to flip out about the cost. Actually, the
owners look at the overall picture, the opportunity cost and
benefit, not the capital tied up. We're seeing that with ADS-B.
Some say, we might not have our airplane four years from
now. I don't want to go to the boss, or the FAA might change
the rules. The FAA has said that is not going to happen.
Operators need to equip now while they can."
Finding its niche
Trimec Aviation started in 1986 with a customer base
consisting mostly of a few flight departments with Cessna
Citations and Learjets. Capitalizing on technicians'
previous experience with Westwind business jets, the
company began specializing in that aircraft and later
expanded to similar jets.
"Trimec Aviation was a big provider for the Westwind
1124," Wolcott said. "It was a niche market for them.

Fifteen years ago, Trimec started taking on the Astra made
by Israeli Aircraft. It's basically the same type of aircraft
as the Westwind as far as systems go, so it was a natural
crossover for them to start maintaining Astras.
"When operators had G200s and G150s coming out
of warranty, they didn't want to take them to Gulfstream
because of the expense. Answering the customer's need,
Trimec expanded into the G150 and G200 market, and has
done extremely well with it."
Today, Trimec Aviation has grown to 30 employees and
more than 50,000 square feet of hangar, workshop and office
space. In 2013, a private equity group acquired the company
with many of the technicians and key staff staying, including
Jim McMichael, who serves as general manager.
A longtime employee with Trimec Aviation, McMichael
started at the company in 2000 as chief inspector.
