"Social media is the different online channels of
communications through which communities share
information, ideas and content," he said. "With social media,
driving engagement is your primary goal. It is posting and
sharing images, videos, infographics and other meaningful
pieces of content to keep your audience engaged and interested
in your brand.
"Social networking is the content development and fostering
of those online relationships; it can extend into blogs, forums and
chat rooms. This is about genuine interaction and conversation,
sparking a connection and gaining a new fan or follower while
growing your referral network."
So social media is the where and social networking is the
what. So the question is: How do you

Like most people, I am more than a
bit confused about which social media
site is which. And more importantly,
which one is best for reaching the
people that I want to get social with.
So here's a short description of the top
players.

Unlike Facebook or LinkedIn, where members need to
approve social connections, anyone can follow anyone on
Twitter. To weave tweets into a conversation thread or connect
them to a general topic, members add hashtags to a keyword

Of course, there are many other social media sites to choose,
but these are generally recognized as the top three.

pedestrian and approachable channel for reaching customers,"
Randa said. "LinkedIn is rapidly gaining adoption; however, it
is a professional platform and your content should be curated
accordingly. Keep in mind they all have
their strengths, and by understanding the
unique audiences, you'll find quicker
success."

Avionics shops like Facebook
Using social networking of any
kind is still in its infancy with avionics
shops and their customers. It's likely
that the majority of shop employees
and customers use Facebook for family
and personal stuff, but not for business
relationships. But because people are
already using Facebook as a personal
communications tool, it is often by
default the easiest and best introduction
to expanding this social networking
powerhouse into your business.
Monica Gualandri, repair station
coordinator at Sarasota Avionics,
explained that transitioning her personal account into a Facebook
page for the company was how it all started.
"I haven't grown up with Facebook like the younger
generation, but I had a Facebook page and used it for personal
stuff," she said. "We were all posting photos of airplanes and
panels on our personal pages, so about six years ago we created a
profile for a person named Sarasota Avionics. It had our location
information, but it looked like someone's personal page.
"We continued to post photos from our flights or
completed panels or interesting airplanes. I don't think we
understood what it was all about at the start. But as we used
it, it just kept growing.
"When we had a new marketing person join us a couple
of years ago, they suggested we turn it into a business page

Facebook
Founded in 2004, Facebook is
the world's most popular social
networking site. A free service, it
allows registered users to create
profiles, upload photos and videos,
send messages and communicate
with friends, family and colleagues.
Facebook also offers a variety of privacy options to its members,
enabling them to control which friends are able to see what
content.
LinkedIn
LinkedIn was launched in 2003 and has become known
as the Facebook for the business community. A LinkedIn
profile page emphasizes skills, employment history and
education. Networked members are called connections, and
unlike Facebook, LinkedIn requires these connections to have
some level of pre-existing relationship. Like Facebook, basic
membership in LinkedIn is free.
Twitter
Launched in 2006, Twitter is a free social networking site that
allows registered members to broadcast short 140 character posts
called tweets. Tweets and replies to tweets can be sent via text
