For pilots and operators who selected as their ADS-B
Out position source a TSO'd WAAS GPS navigator,
there are benefits that have continued to grow throughout
the seven years since the rule became final.
That WAAS GPS not only can serve as approved,
stand-alone navigators for en route and approach use, it
can also double as the position source for an ADS-B Out
package.
And it's been in instrument approaches that the major
benefits of approved WAAS GPS navigators arise. So
far, the majority of these options exist in the form of
all-in-one systems combining the WAAS GPS navigator
with a VHF nav system (localizer and glideslope
receivers included) and a VHF comm radio.
For example, Avidyne offers six WAAS GPS navigator
options, three all-in ones - in two different sizes - and
three stand-alone WAAS GPS navigators, also available
in two different sizes. All six boxes carry TSO-C146b,
making them eligible to serve as the position source for
an ADS-B Out. And Avidyne offers its own 1090 ES
Mode S transponder to fulfill the package.
Avidyne's four IFD500-series models - the 550, 545,
540 and 510 all sport 5.7-inch display screens; the two
IFD400-series models sport 4.8-inch screens. The 440,
540 and 550 are all-in-one models; the 410, 510 and 545
are WAAS GPS navigators only.
All four 500-series models offer Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
connectivity and forward-looking terrain warnings while
these features are optional on the 400-series models.
And the 550 and 545 both include what Avidyne calls
"dynamic Synthetic Vision" - SVS with an outside-theairplane perspective.
BendixKing offers the KSN 770, an all-in one with
a 5.7-inch multifunction display, a 16-watt comm
transmitter, and interfaces enough to work with traffic,
terrain and weather-radar systems. The 770 carries the
TSO-C146b for its WAAS GPS navigation system and
can serve as position source to most popular 978 MHz
and 1090 ES broadcast transponders, including the
company's own 1090 ES models.
Garmin, similar to Avidyne, offers five WAAS GPS
navigators capable of providing position data to an
ADS-B Out package - all carrying TSO-C146b and
thus able to provide the position data to an ADS-B Out

broadcast device.
The GTN 650 is the full-boat all-in-one model with
WAAS GPS, comm and nav/LOC/GS; the GTN 635
lacks the VHF navigation section; the GTN 625 is a
stand-alone WAAS GPS navigation box - no VHF
sections, period. Their screens measure 4.9 inches
diagonal.
The larger GTN 750 and GTN 725 offer the largest
screen in this field, measuring 6.9 inches diagonally.
The 750 offers all the hardware for WAAS GPS and both
VHF modes, nav and comm; the 725 is strictly a WAAS
GPS navigator.
Of course, Garmin offers an array of transponder
options to pair with the GTNs, as well as options for
ADS-B In.
Alternatives in the marketplace
Options continue to grow for those equipping to
satisfy the FAA's ADS-B Out mandate.
Today, a significant number of avenues exist for
bringing an aircraft into compliance with the FAA
mandate using a single box - but without the benefits of
a TSO-C146b-approved WAAS GPS navigator.
In these cases, the approved GPS serves much the
same purpose as the altitude encoder working with
our old friends the Mode C and Mode S transponders
- providing data to the system. In some systems, these
GPS engines also can serve to drive SVS systems
integral to the panel avionics.
You simply can't file an IFR flight plan and fly it using
these GPS receivers; they lack the databases and other
intricacies required to win approval under TSO-C146b.
That said, thousands of pilots fly happily using nonTSO'd GPS navigators to supplement their deduced
reckoning and VOR receivers.
Today, more than a dozen UAT and Extended Squitter
options exist to comply with the FAA mandate.
Appareo, Aspen Avionics, BendixKing, Garmin,
NaxWorx, FreeFlight Systems, Trig Avionics, and
L-3 Aviation Products all offer solutions to meet
the 2020 mandate. Products range from slide-in
replacements for legacy transponders, to those with a
completely integrated WAAS GPS position source to
the aforementioned navigator pairings. Most of these
manufacturers can also help their customers realize the
benefits of ADS-B In.
Aircraft owners should discuss the various options
available to them with their favorite avionics shop. q
