ith one of the most

the industry, Garmin offers solutions
for most any budget and mission,
while providing increasing situational
awareness, enhanced decision-making
and safety.
Recently, Avionics News spoke to
Lee Moore to learn about his work at
Garmin and life outside the office.
You are director of aviation
support at Garmin.
What does that entail?
I lead a global organization for
Garmin that has the responsibility for
providing worldwide technical support
for Garmin's extensive - and growing - line of aviation products and
services. My team not only provides
technical expertise and assistance for

How long have you
worked at Garmin?
I started in December 2004,
so it's just shy of 12 years. I was
the team leader for the Technical
Publications Team for Garmin's
aviation business segment. At that
time, Garmin had four business
segments and about 850 employees at the Olathe campus, and a
few hundred more at locations
in Salem, Oregon; England; and
Taiwan. Now, there are more than
4,000 employees in the Kansas City
metro area. The worldwide total
is more than 10,000. Also, we just
announced a $200 million expansion of our headquarters campus to
include a new manufacturing facility aimed at doubling our avionics
production capacity.
Where did you work
prior to Garmin?
I was at Cessna for three years
ending up as the team leader for
Cessna's Service Bulletin Group
within the Technical Publications
Department. I had originally been
hired as a technical writer and
assigned to write service bulletins

for the Citation XL. Prior to that, I
was an avionics retrofit inspector/
team leader for Raytheon Aerospace
Support Services. In that role, I was in
charge of completing retrofits called
Block 30 or Pacer CRAG on KC -135s.
I started as an avionics installation
technician, but quickly worked my way
into a leadership role by leveraging my
previous aviation maintenance background, a newly-minted private pilot's
license, and a modicum of troubleshooting ability.
Did you grow up in Kansas?
No, I grew up in Fort Worth, Texas,
and lived there until age 16 when my
family moved to New Jersey. My dad
was in telecommunications. He installed
and sold complex telecommunications
phone switches for large buildings.
How did you get from New
Jersey to Kansas?
I enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in early
1991. I started as an electrical and environmental systems specialist working
on C-130s, B-1s and KC-135s at Dyess
Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas. After
more than two years, I cross-trained to
become a combat search and rescue
flight engineer on HH-60 Pavehawks.
After serving nearly eight years, I
received an honorable discharge. I had
earned two associate degrees during my
service, one in aircraft systems maintenance technology and the other in flight
engineering. I continued my schooling
on the GI Bill at New Mexico Highlands
University before life forced me to find
a job. That job was at Raytheon's Pacer
CRAG jobsite at McConnell Air Force
Base in Wichita.
