Hence the name "fusion."
With developments such as a flight-path marker, a pilot should
easily see when the aircraft's trajectory will bring it into contact with
a mountain, a building or off the end of a runway.
The Pro Line Fusion's benefits have already made it popular in
new production models - such as those cited above - but also as
a field upgrade, like those available under the STCs from Textron
Aviation Beechcraft division.
For example, the folks at Duncan Aviation are busy working to
win an STC to install a three-screen Pro Line Fusion package in
the Textron Aviation Cessna CJ3 - an upgrade that will include the
option for the HGS-3500 package.
Brazilian authorities recently approved all three King Air models
equipped with the Pro Line Fusion package - which supports the
HGS-3500 package - and expect more Part 23 HUD-like products
to come.
Past efforts
PAT - also known as Private Aviation Technologies - debuted its
own compact HUD system at the Sun 'n Fun Fly-in several years
ago; a couple of years before that, another developer showed off a
system capable of projecting flight data on the back of a spinning
propeller.
Neither options gained the traction needed to make it in the
market.
But that doesn't mean others aren't trying. Honeywell recently
started shipping an in-flight connectivity package designed for
Part 23 aircraft, and word is that Rockwell Collins won't be alone
in offering a compact HGS or HUD system for long. Systems that
generate the data presented directly from the avionics package are
being researched, and few deny the safety potential of a package
that projects flight data, air data and terrain images - all visible by
looking straight ahead - in smaller aircraft.
As one avionics vendor told Avionics News, "What's useful and
helpful for the upper end has even greater potential down where the
majority of aircraft exist."
Elbit Systems' wearable goggles aimed to serve the same
purpose - but without the need for the projection screen and sundry
other hardware common to HUD and HGS packages.
And MyGoFlight's HUD package, as noted, follows a line
similar to the Rockwell Collins HGS-3500 package by combining
all the components into one compact unit and providing unusual
flexibility in mounting.
Thanks to digital computer power, microelectronics and
advanced imaging hardware, the day may come in the not-todistant future when pilots of almost any aircraft can enjoy the
safety advantages of such advanced visioning gear and, hopefully,
help continue the reduction in accident rates recently enjoyed in
Part 23 aircraft. q
