already are preparing supplemental type certificates.
Aircraft types for which approvals are expected by the
time Gogo Biz 4G goes live include the Falcon 900 series,
Bombardier Global Express models, the Challenger 600
series and Gulfstream 200s, plus the Embraer 145 Series
Shuttle, Legacy 600/650, and Phenom 300 jets, as well as
the Gulfstream V.
If that list appears populated with medium and large
business jets, that's because it is. Gogo's 4G will require
installing a new piece of avionics equipment, plus two
belly-mounted antennas. Operators will need some real
estate for that, plus all the goodies making it worthwhile,
like in-flight entertainment systems. The Gogo Biz 4G
equipment package will incorporate dual-band 802.11ac
Wi-Fi service common among portable devices.
What can you do with it?
According to the company, Gogo Biz 4G "represents a
significant increase in capability when compared to existing
solutions." It will give business aircraft passengers "the
speed they need" - or at least the speed to which they've
grown accustomed. Gogo says its forthcoming technology
will offer a "ground-like performance, including the ability
to stream videos." No longer will passengers depend on
an in-flight entertainment selection limited by available
airborne storage capability or someone else's idea of what
programming is in demand.
That said, Gogo's 4G service and associated hardware
is compatible with the company's existing IFE offering,
Gogo Vision, which is available globally and "lets
customers avoid potentially high data charges incurred
by streaming content to the aircraft via a satellite link."
In addition to "the latest releases from Hollywood and
approximately 200 on-demand movies and TV shows,"
Gogo Vision integrates moving maps, news, flightprogress information and destination weather with its file
sharing and cabin management capabilities, according to
the company.
And Gogo recently announced enhancements geared to
even greater global acceptance, with both its IFE app and
audio tracks configurable in up to seven languages. Gogo's
4G also will incorporate the company's other services,
including Text & Talk, which allows passengers to use their
personal smartphones' mobile numbers while airborne.
According to the company, Gogo Biz 4G will feature
"reliable 4G performance," enabling streaming video

and audio from services like Hulu, Netflix, YouTube,
Pandora, and Spotify, plus video conversations using
applications like Facetime or Skype. Also, no longer will
users be discouraged from downloading email attachments,
engaging in data-intensive web browsing, or conducting
large file transfers.
What else may airborne 4G bandwidth bring to the
business aircraft? The company is "just starting to dip
our toes into that ocean of possibilities," Mellin said. One
of those possibilities is taking the concept of the smart,
networked aircraft farther than current implementations.
For example, The Weather Company, an IBM Business,
has partnered with Gogo to enable delivering "real-time
turbulence reports and alerts directly to pilots, dispatch and
other operations personnel."
Gogo will be implementing TWC's patented Turbulence
Auto PIREP System on its airborne equipment. The
software will access operational data generated by the
aircraft to create reports of turbulence intensity and transmit
them for use by other operators. In turn, crews will be
able to access real-time turbulence reports. "Our ability to
provide access to real-time data through our network will
help pilots and operations teams improve flight planning,"
said Andrew Kemmetmueller, Gogo's vice president of
connected aircraft services.
Already, Gogo's ATG 1000 entry-level connectivity
hardware enables crews to use popular electronic flight
bag applications - Garmin Pilot, Foreflight, JetFuelX,
FltPlan Go - in the cockpit by providing the necessary
link to data sources without dependence on the Federal
Aviation Administration's ADS-B In services. And since
it's a two-way connection, crews can develop and file an
automated flight plan for their next leg while still flying
the previous one, saving everyone time and money. That
kind of bandwidth also enables new mission-oriented
capabilities - like real-time patient monitoring aboard air
ambulances - that previously have been too expensive for
typical customers.
All that is coming to an aircraft cabin near you no later
than mid-2017. But Gogo apparently doesn't plan to stop
there. Already, the company has announced it's developing
a "next generation ground-based technology" for the
airborne connectivity market. Gogo says its new network
will use "unlicensed spectrum, a proprietary modem and
a new beam-forming antenna." It's expected to produce
peak network speeds of more than 100 megabits per
second the company said. In other words, Gogo plans
service faster than the 4G standard for moving platforms.
The service is expected to be available in 2018. q
