Timberline Helicopters plans to put Blackhawks to work

t a ski resort in Vail, pilot Brian Jorgenson
maneuvers his Kaman K-MAX helicopter into
place, carefully working with his ground crew
to position several 50-foot, 4,000-pound metal tower
pieces into place. It's a long day, but it's exciting to see
the project come together, according to Jorgenson, who
flew with his father's helicopter operation for a couple
of years before starting his own business in 2006.
Based in Sandpoint,
Idaho, Jorgenson and
his wife, Ammy, own
and operate Timberline
Helicopters, offering
helicopter heavy lifting and
construction services in the
northwestern U.S.
"When they first started, they leased a K-MAX and
went helicopter logging, living in an RV and traveling
from job site to job site," said Travis Storro, certification
manager for Timberline Helicopters. "Brian and Ammy
grew the company to a point that in 2010 we were able
to acquire another aircraft that had been in a hardlanding incident. We rebuilt that aircraft from the ground
up in cooperation with the manufacturer, using their
technical data and drawings. We really learned a lot
going through that process."

Bringing maintenance in-house
In addition to ski lift construction, Timberline's utilityhelicopter operations include firefighting, logging,
constructing cell towers and power lines, and heavy
hauling of all types. To keep its helicopters flying under the
demanding conditions, the company added an FAA repair
station in the spring of 2014 to perform maintenance, repairs,
modifications and installations.
"We're a Part 145 with
capabilities on all of the
aircraft we operate," Storro
said. "We've also been
approved as a repair vendor
for Kaman Aerospace,
the original manufacturer
of the K-MAX, to do
structural repair on tail-boom assemblies."
Throughout the years, the company has grown its
helicopter fleet, adding a Bell UH-1H, MD Helicopters MD
530F, two Sikorsky UH-60A Blackhawks, as well as an
Airbus AS350 AStar, which it has since sold.
"One of our biggest accomplishments on the avionics
side was with our AStar," Storro said. "We brought the
aircraft home from the factory in Grand Prairie, Texas. It
was still green with a basic ferry package, and we installed a
Geneva center console, an audio system, radios, Technisonic
