usiness aviation is all
about the flexibility to
go where you need when
you need. There being no free lunch,
this flexibility also comes at a cost.
Operating expenses are just a tangible
example, while the intangibles
are, well, intangible. An example
of a business aircraft's intangible
cost might be that its flexibility
creates additional challenges for the
company's employees. The simple
fact of being cooped up in a human
mailing tube for slices of time, cut
off from the rest of the world, didn't
use to be a challenge. But it is now.
Blame it on the Internet.
In 20 short years, the Internet has
transformed all aspects of how we
interact. Perhaps the business world
has seen the most change, with tools
like fax machines and brick and
mortar retail giving way to email on
your cellphone and the ability to buy
or sell almost anything, anywhere, at
any time. Since business people are
thought of as always plugged in and
available, we need to be plugged in
and always available, if for no other
reason than the fear of missing out,
which the kids have abbreviated
FOMO.
Success story
As the fears of modern life go,
FOMO is just one more added to
the list. The good news is FOMO
while airborne has at least a partial
cure: wireless, in-flight connections
to the Internet. In fact, airborne
connectivity is the norm these days
on airline flights, thanks to both
land-based and satellite technologies,
and ever-increasing bandwidth.
Thankfully, today's business aircraft
passenger has many of the same
options. If you have the cabin space,
payload and budget, using your
