Members of this group need your guidance, coaching
and direction - and they need you to know who they are
and what drives them. When you do, you can push them
to improve, just as you can with your A-team. When
you don't, they may slip into doing below-average
work, which is sure to irritate the high performers who
have to pick up the slack. Alternatively, these valuable,
steady employees may choose to leave when they
don't feel their average contributions are appreciated,
according to performance consultant Rebecca Gibson.
Solving for each of these situations requires A-level
management from you and your immediate supervisors
to keep these employees engaged - and to recognize
they can't be uniformly managed.
But since they're good enough, B-team players can
fall off your radar, because none is a squeaky wheel.
You might not even know those who show the greatest
potential to respond to nurturing, according to Anthony
Tjan, managing partner of venture capital firm Cue Ball
and co-author of Heart, Smarts, Guts, and Luck. That's

why you need regular feedback sessions with each to
provide encouragement, praise, appraisals, development,
goals and direction, according to management coach
Stacy Feiner. The purpose is to give them guidance that
stretches each as far as their capabilities allow, while
not overwhelming them.
They should know where they could improve to
get from good to great, and they need a clear career
path that inspires them to move forward, considering
their personal ambitions. If necessary, pair them with
a mentor, such as a current A-team player, so they
learn what it takes to succeed. Reward and recognize
them for meeting your expectations in ways that are
meaningful to them.
That's the heart of ABC management: helping each
employee type progress further in their skills and
capacities to do more at your shop - so they get more in
return. While there are no easy solutions to developing
your people, it's a simple reminder that every one of
your employees needs you present to lead. q
