to nearby Calgary International Airport, Cavalier Aviation
provides aircraft maintenance and avionics installations for
private owner-operators and three flight schools, servicing
mostly small pistons.
"We do service a few turboprops such as King Airs,
TBMs and Piper Meridians, and two or three small
corporate jets," said Hepfner. "We work out of a smaller
airport with a 5,000-foot runway, so that restricts the size of
the aircraft we look after."
The size of the airport also restricts Hepfner from
having one large facility, so he has acquired several smaller
spaces throughout the years, including a 9,000-squarefoot maintenance hangar with 5,000-square-foot office
building, a 10,000-square-foot hangar with classrooms and
aircraft storage for the flight school, and an 8,000-squarefoot hangar to store additional customer and flight school
aircraft. All of the buildings are located on the airport within
a five- to 10-minute walk of each other.

Recent avionics projects
While Cavalier Aviation typically installs smaller systems
such as nav/comm radios and transponders, Hepfner is working
to expand into complex projects.
"We recently retrofitted an early 2000s Caravan with a
Garmin G600 MFD/PFD," said Hepfner, who spends most of
his time managing the business but occasionally ferries aircraft
to customers and handles engine break-ins and avionics test
flights. "We're in the process of putting together a proposal
to retrofit a Cessna Conquest I with the G600 and all the
associated components. That will be a several-month job for
our avionics department."
Cavalier Aviation helps many customers import and
export aircraft, especially Caravans and other Cessnas. The
shop recently imported a Cessna TTx a few months ago and
upgraded it with Wi-Fi capability. The busy owner wanted to be
