able to receive service on his laptop and cellphone. Cavalier's
technicians set up the ability through the TTx's Garmin G2000
system.
"To test the system, the mechanic sent a text from the
airplane to a cellphone here in the office, which was pretty
cool," Hepfner said. "He was like, 'This is a scary thing for
the future to be texting and flying.' That's where it's cool to be
a Cessna-authorized service facility. We get to look after that
kind of work - new avionics upgrades with Wi-Fi capabilities -
for the G1000 systems and the new Cessnas with the G2000."
Slowly growing
Hepfner would like to expand his avionics and cabin
electronics business, but he has to take it slow.
"It's just hard to find good, experienced, certified
technicians," he said. "It's been one of our challenges. If
we could find technicians, we would definitely like to grow
that side of the business, because it fits in everything else

we're doing with Cessna and Garmin and the new avionics
coming out. A lot of people with aircraft are retrofitting and
upgrading. I think there's definitely a market for it."
In addition to growing his avionics business, Hepfner is
eyeing adding an FBO. Most of the elements are already
in place with the exception of refueling services. He just
needs a facility to bring everything together under one roof.
Finding the right space is part of Hepfner's five-year plan.
"The main thing is that we're just continuing to grow
and expand," he said. "The more small components you
have in your business, the better off you are. Down the
street from me, a fellow who had a small charter company
just closed. He relied on oil and gas business to keep his
company going. With the price of oil and gas down, he's
out of business, whereas we keep chugging right along. We
serve several different areas. We don't have all of our eggs
in one basket. If one of our businesses is a bit slower than
the other, we know we're not going to be out of business.
We'll continue to do that, to branch off into different areas
and grow. When the right opportunity comes along, we'll be
ready to pounce." q
