irtually everyone agrees that general aviation needs more experienced,
skilled technicians. With the rebounding economy and growing customer
demand, many repair stations are eager to fill vacant positions while others see potential to grow but can't do so. In the 2015 AEA Rate and Labor
Survey, 90 percent of respondents said finding qualified technicians is difficult.
"Montreal is a large aerospace area," said Pascal Gosselin, founder and owner of
Aero Teknic in St. Hubert, Quebec. "We compete labor-wise with Bombardier, Pratt
& Whitney and CAE. It's been a challenge

To attract and retain highly skilled employees, companies in other industries
such as technology and marketing have
increased pay, created flexible schedules, expanded parental leave times, and
added mandatory vacation days or unlimited vacation time. Some companies pepper their places with foosball tables, pinball machines, and cafés or kitchens with
free food. But what works for the general aviation industry?
Aviation has unique challenges, including smaller profit margins, extensive regulations and a market that's sensitive to economic factors. What's more, working in
aviation can be incredibly demanding and stressful. Aviation's 24/7 schedule, quick
turn times and high customer expectations bring tremendous pressure, according
to James Zollo, founder of DFW Instrument, LLC in Addison, Texas. Avionics and
maintenance technicians are on the front lines of that pressure every day.
