off a year, the U.S. doesn't require minimum paid time off
for workers. However, U.S. employers are beginning to
take note of the benefits. Paid personal days are increasing nationwide among both small and large companies, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
In 2012, 84 percent of private industry employees received vacation, holiday or personal leave. "Seventy-two
percent of workers received both paid holidays and paid
vacations, and 61 percent were covered by sick leave
plans," according to statistics on the Bureau's website.
"For employers, the cost for providing these benefits to
employees was $1.98 per hour worked."
When more vacation days just aren't an option, some
managers allow employees a high degree of flexibility
with their time in order to handle family and personal responsibilities. They also look for ways to compensate employees who work late or on their day off with equivalent
paid time off on other days, often when the shop is a little
less busy. Don't forget all those off-duty calls and texts
with customers, experts note. They add up, too, and deserve recognition for supporting the business.
"We allow people to be flexible with their time," Gosselin

said. "They can basically set their own schedule if they want.
They can leave early one day and come in early the next. We
have one avionics technician who likes to come in early in
the morning and leave at 4 p.m. It works better for his commute. Flexibility extends to vacations, as well. For example,
my avionics manager is a hunter. He always takes a week off
to go hunting. We're flexible to keep our employees happy."
What about creating a great place to work?
Culture and values ranked as the most important factor
in employee satisfaction, according to the Glassdoor survey. Fortunately, culture is the one thing that companies
can most easily influence, and it's the reason why foosball
tables and free food work.
Gosselin points to other quality-of-life issues as helpful,
too, in retaining great employees. Specifically, his shop's
location outside Montreal means less traffic, a short, easy
commute and cheaper housing.
"We also focus on the fact that our work is hands on,"
Gosselin said. "We include technicians in flight-testing installed systems to give them hands-on experience. If you
work at a big company as an avionics tech, the chance
you're going to actually go flying is probably almost nil.
