what my family does - we grow aviation companies."
Connell Aviation Group works with general aviation
airports, FBOs, tool manufacturers and suppliers, and
parts companies. "For me, the most fun is working with
avionics dealers and FBOs," she said.
The Connell family members make up the
company's executive advisory board. That includes
her grandfather, father and two uncles. In addition, her
grandmother, mother and aunt hold leadership positions
in the firm. Outside of family members, Connell
Aviation Group employees 12 people.
The company recently joined the Aircraft Electronics
Association in order "to do good work in that industry,"
she said. "Our board members guide me, and I have an
uncle who worked in avionics. This is a good industry,
and we should serve them."
When it comes to learning to fly - Connell is a
student pilot - flight instructing also is a family affair.
She is being taught to fly by her grandfather who
renewed his CFI rating in order to help teach her.

"The plan is to be my grandfather's last student," she
said. "He also taught my dad and my big brother and
lots of other people. It's an emotional story for me -
my grandfather is the first to sign my logbook."
Despite the success of Connell Aviation Group,
Connell said, "It's been rewarding to be able to have
the freedom to try new things and take risks and see
if they work. It's tough, though. One of the biggest
struggles as an owner is articulating vision and having
it trickle down and be embraced by the staff."
She is not shy about sharing some of her mistakes,
including her biggest one that she shares with every
new employee.
"While I was still in TV, I was working the day
Timothy McVeigh was to be executed," she recalled.
"My one and only job was to connect the live shot with
my local station so everyone could see the execution
site. It was all on my shoulders. When the time came,
my team pushed the wrong button, and we missed
it. A few seconds later, the station's news director
telephoned and yelled at me that the next time Timothy
McVeigh got executed live on television, I should do it
right."
