and Airbus reveal significant
employment growth in aviation
support fields worldwide. And
current trends, at least in the U.S.,
indicate a significant shortage of
qualified personnel. There are a
number of factors that tend not to
draw the best-capable and qualified
young people into our profession.
But it is clear to many that this
trend must be subdued. In addition,
basic training for those interested
in entering aviation maintenance
has not evolved over the years. In
fact, many schools are still teaching
curriculums developed in the 1960s,
and guidance materials provide little
data for installing equipment such
as Ethernet cables, digital busses
and Wi-Fi networks. The good
news is that a group of industry
professionals (including the Aircraft
Electronics Association) have
formed ASTM Committee F46 with
the intent of establishing a "global
need to know" for the various
specialized fields contained within
"aerospace personnel."
Undertaking projects intended
to modify or alter aircraft do not
necessarily need to be a tribulation.
Proper and detailed planning is
essential to the process, but first
and foremost, thoroughly capturing
and understanding the expectations
of those commissioning the job
along with the ultimate final users.
Proper planning cannot begin until
the aircraft pedigree, including
certification basis, is validated.

Airbus, and the industry depends
on us to understand the nuances
associated with certification
to ensure long-term continued
airworthiness on any project we

Business aircraft operators have always wanted

Bonanzas,

King Airs, Barons and even Learjets without it were
interested in having their aircraft upgraded. Donald
Duncan operated Duncan Aviation, an aircraft sales
and support facility in Lincoln, Nebraska. He listened

Fiedler, an electronics engineer, as the company's 17th
