RESILIENCE IS PARTICULARLY
IMPORTANT IN THE
WORKPLACE.

Cooper, resilience enables employees to stay focused on tasks
and goals and function properly in spite of stressors.
That's because these people employ thoughts, feelings, and
actions that we'd usually describe as representing "hardiness"
and "inner strength," according to Jayne Carrington,
managing director of Right Management Workplace Wellness.
As a result, they remain positive, focused, flexible and
proactive. Not surprisingly - but certainly alarming - the
opposite is the inability to cope, and in the not-so-long run,
that negativity, frustration and anxiety can turn into physical
and mental health problems.
Trying economic times offer plenty of opportunities for
employees to exhibit both kinds of responses. Yet, obviously,
more of the former and less of the latter results in a happier,
healthier workplace in your avionics shop, according to Jamie
Gruman, an associate professor of organizational behavior at
the University of Guelph.
This means a team that performs better, with greater
productivity. That's the result of a team having the capability
to use active coping processes to approach challenges, and
those problem-solving skills can be learned through training,
mentoring or even professional counseling through an
employee assistance plan.
It should also mean this is something you'll want your
people to learn to keep them at their top performance and
away from burnout and "rust out," according to Robertson.
After all, your success depends on your team's creativity and
dependability, and your shop needs people who can navigate
uncertainty, handle change, and effectively wrangle their
personal adversity.
This offers two benefits. First, resilience beats stress, and
stress is the major cause of workplace absenteeism, illness
and mental health issues, including anxiety and depression,

according to Carrington. Avoiding each should be a priority.
Second, organizations from the federal government to
consulting firms to academia say that resilience is one of
the key competencies for future leaders - both formal and
informal. Furthermore, resilient employees exhibit greater
commitment and loyalty, show more positive workplace
behaviors, and demonstrate greater career longevity, according
to researchers at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. More
importantly, they say, resilience is a key component of personal
success, no matter how you measure it.
Rebuilding strength
While stress in inevitable, we all get to choose how we
react to it. Although some of us are better at it than others,
resilience is a teachable trait, according to Sam Goldstein,
co-author of The Power of Resilience. Here are seven
characteristics of resilient people that model how you and
yours can build it, too.
1. Cultivate a sense of purpose. Resilient people are
guided by vision, objectives and goals that give meaning to
their work and lives, all of which direct that person toward a
satisfying role, according to Barton. At work, this means they
do tasks that have value beyond simply collecting a paycheck,
such as improving customers' lives, helping them through
problems and contributing to the success of your shop. These
workers celebrate every small step toward that goal they
make every day. In their personal lives, they do things that
give them a sense of accomplishment, too, which helps them
create their idealized life and make every day meaningful.
Promoting the vision and values of your shop can inspire this
among your people, too.
