friendships with peers and co-workers
- along with emotional support,
positive feedback, and help overcoming
workplace problems. Lunchtime social
sessions, after-hours get-togethers,
mentoring arrangements, and other
outings pay dividends in building
resilience, as does time spent with
outside friends and family, volunteering
for civic groups, or participating in
faith communities.
7. Stay healthy. Resilient people
understand that a good diet, physical
activity and recreation maintain
balance. They also tend to stressmanagement activities that build their
sense of wellbeing. Wading through
challenging times takes a toll, so if
you're feeling the strain, take a break
to give yourself a period of respite by
doing anything that's not work related,
according to Robertson Cooper. In fact,
make sure you put these activities on
your schedule; you can't afford to skip
the things that keep you revitalized,
such as 30 minutes of daily exercise
or dinner with friends. Similarly, get
good sleep to combat bad decisionmaking and mental strain. Eat well -
people who have good nutrition have
a 28 percent better stress-management
scores - and recognize the signs of
distress in your team. Refer troubled
employees to stress counseling to
prevent absenteeism and defections.
With some idea of how resilience
presents in the workplace, you can
help yourself and your team devise
strategies for improving it for each
of you. But recognize it may take
time to build, especially if you're
already recovering from a major
setback or loss. Make a plan and
take action to turn things around, and
keep working at it.
While you can't always prevent the
storm, you can prepare your avionics
shop for the tough times that come with
it. In return, you might find your shop
stronger for the strain. q
