GARMIN ADVANCES ADS-B OPTIONS

tion source, such as a Garmin GTN 650 or 750 or the GNS models with WAAS GPS. Operators without an approved WAAS GPS
navigator have an option buy their GTX 335 or 345 equipped with
an approved integral WAAS GPS engine.
The choice is up to the buyer, and an operator already equipped
with an approved WAAS GPS navigator can opt to get the GTX
335 sans GPS engine for a suggested retail price of $2,995.
Adding a compliant WAAS GPS ups the price by $800 to
$3,795 - among the lowest cost for an ADS-B Out compatible
package currently available for FAA-certificated aircraft.
ADS-B In is not an option in the GTX 335.
Step up to the GTX 345 - to weather the storms
and watch the traffic
Garmin's GTX 345 delivers all the best traits of the GTX
335 - but with a couple of features that up the ante for competing offerings.
First, the buyer still gets to choose whether to equip the 345
with an integral WAAS GPS engine, or whether to tap into an
existing WAAS navigator to supply the position, altitude, airspeed and flight vector required under the FAA's final rule.
But the GTX 345 keeps the capabilities standard in the GTX
335, while adding significantly to the features set.
For example, Garmin integrates a dual-band ADS-B In
receiver into the GTX 345, providing the In option for both
frequencies the FAA employs to broadcast free services to compatible aircraft. With its ADS-B In capability, the 345 supports
ADS-R/TIS-B traffic.
That means no need to worry about an ADS-B ground station
being in-range for a 1090 ES-In aircraft to "see" a 978 universal
access transceiver within range. The GTX 345 receives Traffic
Information Service-Broadcast on both channels. With an extensive list of compatible displays - Garmin and other manufacturers - the GTX 345 should appeal to a broad spectrum of
operators flying behind glass cockpits.
Garmin also equipped the GTX 345 with a second avenue
for using the free broadcast services available from the FAA -
this one wireless.
To serve up the wireless functions, the GTX 345 incorporates
Garmin's Connext hardware and delivers its features in two
ways.
First, regardless of the aircraft's avionics configuration, the
GTX 345 allows operators to wirelessly receive ADS-B traffic
and weather, as well as precise GPS position data for use within
mobile applications. The integral AHRS can provide backup
attitude information from the integral AHRS via Garmin's Connext hardware, also built into the GTX 345.
And the wired connection is available for compatible displays. But the Connext hardware brings other benefits to the
operator flying behind a GTX 345.

Seeing is believing
For example, Garmin enhanced Synthetic Vision Technology
with the transponder's integral AHRS adds to the display GPSderived airspeed, altitude and vertical speed, all overlaid on a rich
three-dimensional topographic landscape.
Garmin designed the electronics of the GTX 345 to display
traffic and weather enabled by the GTX 345 on many of its own
and other cockpit displays.
Of course, the G1000 and several other Garmin display units
can display the In traffic and Flight Information Services-Broadcast weather - both text and graphic - as can Garmin's GTN series of all-in-one WAAS GPS/VHF comm/VHF nav/MFD units,
the GTN 650 and GTN 750. Garmin's earlier all-in-ones and other
panel-mounted MFDs can also display traffic and weather available to pilots flying G1000-equipped aircraft.
Equipped with the integral WAAS GPS engine, the GTX 345
and 345R are priced at $5,795; without the WAAS GPS receiver
the price drops to $4,995. All prices are Garmin's suggested retail
prices and don't include installation.
Cutting the cords
But even panel installed, the GTX 345 with its integral Connect
Bluetooth capabilities opens up other options for displaying TIS-B
and FIS-B data.
Wireless compatibility starts with Garmin's popular aera
796/795 portable aviation GPS and mobile applications including
Garmin Pilot and ForeFlight Mobile. Traffic is transformed within
Garmin Pilot, which also leverages exclusive TargetTrend and
TerminalTraffic. And this list could well grow longer as Garmin
delivers more GTX 335 and 345 transponders and its engineers
continue writing code to enable additional features.
The wireless system of the GTX 345 supports electronic flight
bag systems, including Garmin Pilot, ForeFlight Mobile and
Garmin's aera 795/796 tablets.
But the proof of any avionics system's capabilities and value,
however, require time aloft to assess. So lock up, strap in and let's
go fly the GTX 345R.

attitude and SVT - in one box
Garmin's Jessica Koss met with Avionics News at Stearman

Wichita. Our demonstrator for the day: Garmin's Diamond DA-40
Star test-bed aircraft, equipped with a two-display G1000 panel -
and the GTX 345R.
Mounted aft of the passenger cabin in a remote avionics bay,
the GTX 345R was effectively invisible - except for the function controls and input it provided to the G1000, both the PFD
and MFD.
Following a normal startup and initialization of the G1000
package, we departed Stearman's Runway 17 and after a right
