ASU operates a Cessna 206 and a Bell JetRanger, which
are both equipped for training.
For the first 15 years of operation, ASU represented
ITT. Since then, it moved to L-3 Warrior Systems. Along
the way, the company continually expanded, pushing
harder into the international market. It boasts a big
presence in South America, especially in Colombia. The
company is expanding into Europe, the Middle East and
Africa. ASU contracts with local representatives and
distributors in key regions throughout the world to assist
customers in selection of the optimal solution to meet their
needs. Including the home office in Idaho, customers have
21 locations on five continents from which to choose.
Coupled with Aviation Specialties' growth is the habit of
employing good people who want to grow along with the
company. "You take care of your people, and they will take
care of the business," Atwood said. "We have people who
have been here since the beginning."
Like Atwood, those people are concerned about the
company's quality of products and service.
In order to maintain a high standard of quality for
both products and service, ASU has tried to eliminate its
dependence on outside vendors. The company cuts its own
filters and grinds its own glass. In addition, the company
builds its own lights and lighting arrays. Not only does the

in-house work produce high-quality products, but it also
eliminates scheduling problems, which would crop up too
often with outside vendors.
A few years ago, ASU received news of a rescue made
successful by its product. STARFlight, located in Travis
County, Texas, sent three Eurocopter EC 145s out for
several hours in the early morning hours of Sept. 8, 2010,
responding to distress calls and successfully rescuing
13 people from flood waters caused by Tropical Storm
Hermine around Austin, Texas. The rescue operation was
the largest to date for the unit's EC 145s.
"The weather conditions were extremely adverse with
high winds and heavy rains during much of the time the
aircraft were deployed," said Willy Culberson, director of
operations for STARFlight.
Culberson piloted one of the three EC 145s, which
rescued an emergency crew stranded in a zodiac boat that
had been attempting to make its own rescues. "The precision
of the controls of the EC 145 was incredible and allowed us
to perform a stationary hover over a small area and lower a
rescuer on our hoist into the boat to pick up the occupants
and bring them back into the helicopter," he said.
STARFlight has been flying the EC 145s since 2006.
