2016 AEA Member of the Year,
AEA Associate Member of the Year
After his discharge from the
Army in 1985, DeGroot attended
the Spartan College of Aeronautics
where he received an associate
degree in avionics and instruments
in 1987.
DeGroot's first job, upon
completion of his degree, was at
Eagle Aviation, a small shop in
Minnesota. He worked there three
years until he accepted a job from
Bill Hemme, owner of Spencer
Avionics in Spencer, Iowa. In
December 1998, Hemme informed
his employees he had sold the shop
unless one of his employees was
interested in buying it. In February
1999, he became the proud new
owner of Spencer Avionics.
Business was good until Sept.
11, 2001. DeGroot recalls his drive
into work that day and hearing
the news report and thinking an
airplane doesn't run into a building
on a clear day.
Not even a month after the
attacks of 9/11, AEA President
Paula Derks called DeGroot and
said the AEA was looking for
a shop owner to testify before
Congress about the effects the
attacks had on small business in the
aviation industry. DeGroot thought
Derks wanted a recommendation;
he didn't realize she was asking
him to be that voice. On Oct.
11, 2001, DeGroot represented
small shops before Congress
and explained how the airspace
shutdown had severely hampered
aviation businesses, and he asked

Congress to open the airspace to
international business jets and
asked for low-interest loans for
shops to assist them in getting
through this time.
DeGroot served two years on
the AEA's board of directors.
He regularly attends the AEA
International Convention & Trade
Show, as well as the AEA Connect
conferences.
DeGroot's company, Spencer

Avionics, services a seven-state
area specializing in small to light
twin aircraft. In January 2009,
Spencer Avionics built a new
14,000-square-foot hangar that is
geo thermal heated and cooled.
DeGroot and his wife have four
children and three grandsons with a
fourth grandchild on the way.
