violating the regulations. It will
help you determine what is and is
not contract maintenance; it will
help you with the recordkeeping
of the contract maintenance
authority; and finally, it will help
in the recordkeeping of contract
maintenance providers.
According to Daniel L. Schacter
in his book Psychology, there are
three types of memory biases:
consistency bias, change bias
and egocentric bias. Schacter
states that consistency bias is
the bias to reconstruct the past
to fit the present. Change bias
is the tendency to exaggerate
differences between what we feel
or believe in the present and what
we previously felt or believed in
the past. Egocentric bias is a form
of change bias, the tendency to
exaggerate the change between
the past and the present in order to
make ourselves look good in any
given situation. We are all victims
of bias, some more than others,
and some, especially those with
the responsibility to oversee the
industry, may not be fully aware
of their own personal biases. Too
often we hear this: "When I was
with XYZ Company, we did it
this way."
Hopefully, by understanding not
only the "what" of the regulations
and guidance but also the "why"
of the regulations and guidance,
we can minimize our tendency
to be affected by memory biases.
Hopefully, by being able to see
around the obstruction, we can

help you see the environment in
front. And hopefully, by being able
to see the environment in front of
the obstruction, you will have less
tendency to "shoot the messenger"

when your authority representative
shares the latest information from
the aviation capitals of the world.
