UNIVERSAL AVIONICS SYSTEMS CORP. announced
accomplishment of the first flight of MD Helicopters Inc.
MD 902 Explorer with the InSight Integrated Flight Deck.
The successful testing was achieved at MDHI's Mesa,
Arizona, facility in multiple phases and concluded Feb. 17.
"This is an important step in the development of the
new avionics suite for the MD 902," said GRADY DEES,
Universal Avionics director of technical sales. "Flight testing was conducted in multiple phases including ground
run operations, ramp area hover/maneuvering, and airport
area operations with speed and altitude buildups. It concluded with an up and away flight to a test area away from
the airport traffic area."
According to Universal Avionics, MDHI is the launch
OEM customer with the InSight Integrated Flight Deck for
production and retrofit MD 902 Explorer helicopters. The
flight deck features two or three large format high-resolution LCD displays with LED backlighting. A collectivemounted Cursor Slew Switch allows for a unique Point
& Click display control allowing pilots to keep "hands on,
head up" during all phases of flight.

Universal Avionics also noted that initial flight testing for
the integration of EFI-890H Advanced Flight Displays in
the Airbus Helicopters Super Puma AS332L/L1 with authorized dealer, Heli-One, is now complete.
This solution is customized for Super Pumas and
includes hover indication, vertical speed scale, vertical
speed setting and desired airspeed among others.

GARMIN introduced the aera 660, a new featurerich, purpose-built aviation portable. According to the
company, the compact 5-inch capacitive touchscreen
boasts a bright, sunlight readable display complete
with rich, interactive maps and a built-in GPS/
GLONASS receiver that can be viewed in portrait or
landscape modes for optimum customization. The
aera 660 encompasses many of the features of the
aera and GPSMAP aviation portable series, adding
new Connext wireless capabilities, WireAware
wire-strike avoidance technology and more. New
database options along with built-in Wi-Fi database
updating capabilities allow customers to access
the most up-to-date data, including daily U.S. fuel
prices. Bluetooth supports the display of ADS-B
In traffic and weather from a variety of sources,
including the GDL 39/GDL 39 3D, Flight Stream and
the GTX 345 ADS-B transponder.

Garmin also announced the selection of a
completely integrated Garmin avionics suite by Air
Evac Lifeteam for its fleet of Bell 206 and Bell 407
helicopters.
This Night Vision Goggle compatible upgrade
consists of the G500H glass flight display, GTN 650
touchscreen GPS/NAV/COMM and GTR 225 COMM
radio, as well as the GDL 88 ADS-B datalink and
GRA 55 radar altimeter.
Optimized for rotorcraft, this avionics suite offers
features that reduce pilot workload and assure fleet
commonality, according to Garmin. Additionally,
these avionics fulfill Part 135 radar altimeter and
Helicopter Air Ambulance equipage requirements
set forth by the FAA, as well as HTAWS and ADS-B
initiatives.
The Garmin Pilot app completes this suite by
offering helicopter-tailored features so operators are
equipped with the latest capabilities.
