The following information is from the Federal Aviation
Administration AC 145-9.

QUESTION:

I have a customer who mails me their transponder for
inspection and maintenance. Is this allowed?

ANSWER:

No.
14 CFR Part 43 paragraph 43.7 (f) does allow for
a "person holding at least a private pilot certificate"
to approve return to service preventive maintenance
as allowed for in paragraph 43.3 (g). And Part 43,
Appendix A, paragraph c on preventive maintenance
states that "Preventive maintenance is limited to the

AC 20-03 v1.0 - Identification and management of
aeronautical products.
The purpose of this AC is to provide guidance to the
