New avionics upgrades seek the favor of King Air operators

ince its first flight in 1963, the King Air has
become the majority ruler of the turboprop
dynasty in the U.S. In round numbers, more
than 7,000 airframes descended from the
piston-powered Queen Air have rolled down the
production lines at Beech, and then Raytheon, and
now Textron. Slightly less than half of them have been
90/100-series. With more than 1,100 siblings, the B200
is the dominant member of the King Air family.
So it should be no surprise that the 200-series is the
member of the King Air family being courted by the
avionics manufacturers that have introduced integrated
suites in the past year. And it is the exclusive customer
for BendixKing's new three-screen AeroVue integrated
flight deck, which shared the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh
2015 stage with Rockwell Collins hands-on exhibition
of its touch-screen Pro Line Fusion system. Sandel
Avionics debuted its Avilon system for the King Air
200 at the National Business Aviation Association's
2015 Convention and Exhibition. All of them meet the
2020 NextGen ADS-B requirements and embody the
latest avionics technology.

Suggesting some level of royal intrigue, why the
sudden interest in this aviation community, and might
it be an opportunity for the dealers who serve it?
Obviously, the federal decree that all aircraft must be
equipped with ADS-B Out by Jan. 1, 2020, plays a
pertinent role. But is a necessary capability that can be
added with a component to an existing avionics system
enough to warrant an entirely new integrated suite of
cockpit technology? Given the investment made by
the manufacturers to develop their systems, and the
investment the operators of the King Air family will
make to employ them, there must exist reasons beyond
ADS-B.
Sandel offers a more nuanced explanation because it
created its Avilon system, an innovative plug-and-play
total panel replacement (explained in great detail in the
March 2016 issue of Avionics News), and then studied
the eligible airframes to determine its inaugural market.
This research showed that more than 90 percent of
the eligible King Airs are still flying with the original
avionics, according to Gerry Block, Sandel's president
and chief executive officer. "To us, King Airs are a
