the reliability and repair of their existing systems.
Several factors motivated the introduction of the
Pro Line Fusion, according to Adam Evanschwartz,
Rockwell Collins director of business and regional
systems. "Airspace modernization is advancing around
the world with ADS-B, WAAS more than a decade ago,
and LPV approaches. The King Air has been a popular
platform for decades, and it is a large fleet with diverse
missions, from owner-operators and corporate to special
missions such as air ambulance and aerial surveillance."
Pro Line has been standard equipment since the early
1990s, and it was an option before that. "It's all coming
together at a point where owners are ready to invest in
an upgrade."
With its 14-inch-wide touch screens, Fusion is the
next iteration of the Pro Line family that started with
the CRT attitude and heading situation indicator, he
said. And the touch screens are standard equipment on
the new King Air 350i, 250 and C90GTx taking shape
on Textron's production lines. In steps essentially
determined by the equipment originally installed, Pro
Line 21, Pro Line II and the founding Pro Line, the
Collins Fusion STC will enable owners of King Airs of
the appropriate vintages to upgrade their members of
turboprop's royal family with the same system that's
in brand new King Airs. "This has implications on the

airplane's resale value, say five years down the line,"
Evanschwartz said.
Providing the King Air's standard avionics has
given Collins "a lot of experience and insight in the
certification history of the airplane," Evanschwartz
said. "We have folks who know the system, its wiring,
inside and out, and we apply that when developing new
systems, like Fusion, for the airplane." And the Collins
engineers look back as well as forward. "The Fusion
upgrade only replaces needed components that provide
the same flight deck experience as brand new King Airs.
If the components are up to spec, owners won't need to
put money into a new autopilot or VHF navigation or
communication radios."
Fusion offers a limited opportunity to authorized
Rockwell Collins dealers. They can make Fusion
upgrades in King Airs equipped with Pro Line and Pro
Line II. King Airs equipped with Pro Line 21, according
to Evanschwartz, must step up to Fusion at a Textron
Service Center, all of which are also Rockwell Collins
dealers.
Given the unique, unitary nature of the Sandel
Avionics' four-screen Avilon upgrade, the company
has pre-approved just four dealers: Cutter Aviation,
Landmark Aviation, Stevens Aviation and Rocky
Mountain Aircraft in Canada. Each of them provides
comprehensive King Air service, said Steve Fulton,
Sandel's senior flight test pilot and performance-based
