"Helicopter operators have traditionally been more
attracted to tracking systems in general," O'Hara said.
"This is usually due to a greater awareness of safety in
helicopter pilots that is reflected in their training for
when something might go wrong rather than if."
Honeywell's Sky Connect Tracker systems are
an example of products designed specifically for
aircraft flying under contract to the U.S. and Canadian
government for aerial firefighting and other public
service missions. With Sky Connect Tracking, aircraft
can be tracked in real-time via the Iridium satellite
network. Like Latitude's WebSentinel NEXUS service,
users log onto web-based software to see data such as an
aircraft's location, flight plan and weather overlays on
topographical maps.
In short, even with the industry's major advancements
in high-speed data communications, providing operators

with a comprehensive, real-time understanding of their
aircraft's operations is still rooted in the future. We're
getting close.
"There's a hugely exciting future ahead to Spidertracks
and hopefully other flight tracking providers, also,"
O'Hara said. "We're trying to solve the basic problem
of knowing what aircraft are doing when you can't see
them. We're able to show where the aircraft is flying, no
matter where it is in the world. But we're trying to go
further than that, we're trying to show how it's flying,
where it's going to, where it's going after that, who's
flying it and who's onboard. We're trying to deliver a
simple solution to aircraft operators and increase their
operational transparency and save them money."
Rios agreed, adding, "Aircraft tracking is still in its
infancy. Today, we're still talking about leveraging
existing technologies to Band-Aid the real requirement.
We're trying to provide real-time flight data telemetry
while the aircraft is flying but to do so in a financially
responsible manner so that any operator can operate their
aircraft with this safety aspect." q
