"We have a good customer base, and that's the No.
1 thing," Ranasingha said. "They take care of us and
keep coming back."
Interestingly, one of Avionics Installation's
customers was in possession of a Boeing 727. The
customer had been using it for commuting, but
intended to fly no longer. For this particular customer,
scrapping the airframe was a more attractive option
than selling. Knowing that Ranasingha's shop was
considering the construction of a mezzanine, the
customer offered the company his fuselage.
Avionics Installations thought this was a great
idea. A "cool" space in which to work would
increase owner, employee, and, ultimately, customer
satisfaction. In the end, permitting and other problems
derailed the plan to use the actual fuselage. Still, the
idea was too attractive to abandon.
The company used the 727 as a template, then

ingeniously used the same machine used for cutting
instrument panels. Ranasingha reported that the job
was easier than expected.
"We put wood in the machine, and it put out the
parts," he said. "We screwed it together like normal
construction."
As a result, the company now has additional space
available to perform bench repairs - quite a unique
business practice that shows itself well to customers.
The space includes a conference room for meetings
and an office for paperwork completion. Although it
could have chosen traditional construction techniques,
the company chose to put in a space with personality
- its personality. Best of all, it's a cool space that will
not only increase productivity, but also employee
satisfaction. q
