retention. And that's why it's important to you.
In practical terms, this leadership shows employees
that you're interested in the things that concern them and
cause them pain. Together, it suggests that when you care
about your people, your business priorities will take care
of themselves. Making it work for you, though, requires
knowing what it is, seeing why it's important, and making
efforts to build it in your avionics shop. Ultimately,
it means understanding how you do unto others will
determine how they'll do unto you.
People first
College basketball coach John Wooden was famous
for saying, "You have to really love your people to get
the most out of them." That attitude led to 10 national
championships in a 12-year period for UCLA, including
an unprecedented seven in a row. And while that's a tip
of a hat to near-ancient history, there's still something
to be learned about caring for people, the cost of cold
supervision, and the key to building the relationships that
reflect that empathy.
As you know, the candidates most often given a chance
to lead in a business are those who display competence in
their current role. But while technical ability is admirable,
it doesn't necessarily correlate with an ability to lead - to
inspire others, to engage them in the shop's mission, or
to assist them in succeeding in their roles. It's the secret
sauce that creates happy and healthy work environments
that most effectively produce positive business results.
This is where caring fits into leadership, and mastery
of that skill can change the culture of a shop for the
better. Consider that many employees, including, perhaps,
some of yours, believe that managers take pleasure in
pointing out mistakes instead of building strengths and

shaping potential, according to Lawrence-Ross, and
that's reinforced when they don't get credit for their
contributions, they're criticized among their peers, and
they're kept blind to their performance and progress. In
these cases, they don't feel appreciated, and eventually that
spoils their motivation.
Even if you say that your people are your most valuable
asset, they're watching to see if your behavior shows that
value, according to business-quality expert Denis Leonard.
It's not much of surprise, then, that a caring leader is
reported to be one of the key motivators at a job, according
to consultant Alan Zimmerman, especially when that
person spends time with them to learn how employees are
doing personally and professionally.
The goal is to show empathy and build trust; both are
required to build relationships, and without them, those
connections fail to launch. As a leader, your task is to show
them you care about their well-being more than you care
about productivity and profitability, according to Pickard.
In return, they'll more readily take ownership of outcomes.
When that happens, you're well on your way to creating a
culture that is supportive of team members' contributions
and efforts, and that truly does put people first. Ultimately,
your customers will feel that, too.
Building service
While all of this may seem like a quaint notion, it's
backed up by research on employee motivation. With it
also comes insight on the role of servant leadership in
performance and building creative problem-solving and
confidence.
