When the boss leads from a servant
perspective - asking "what do you
need" or "is there anything I can do
to help you" instead of "do this, don't
do that" - employees feel valued, feel
more able to reach their potential,
and, in turn, give back to the
company and its customers. Likewise,
when employees see their manager
as a role model, this leadership
style trickles down. They mimic the
qualities to create a culture of service,
and their appreciation for the boss
manifests itself in greater teamwork,
loyalty and dedication, according
to Liden and his colleagues, who
authored the study.
Managers shouldn't expect
employees to provide customers with
positive experiences if they're not
having great ones, too, according to
Pickard. Likewise, they can't easily
serve both a results-focused manager
and a service-hungry customer;
instead, that boss should lead the
service effort to build a culture of
support so the entire team can work
together to best serve the latter.
Furthermore, this style of
leadership empowers employees by
showing them the boss has confidence
in their abilities, acknowledges the
significance of their efforts, and aims
to remove bureaucratic constraints of
their work, according to researchers at
Rice and American Universities, and
it reflects the manager's trust in them
that comes with sincere emotional
connection. According to their study,
when employees feel that trust is

genuine, they not only feel it in return
for the leader, but they also are more
likely to be creative and innovative
in their service delivery and task
performance, the researchers say.
That's important, according to
Pickard, because it's everyone's
responsibility to continually improve
the company. While leaders obviously
take the lead in reinforcing a caring,
creative culture, employees must
act as the eyes and ears within the
company to speak up about areas that
need improvement, and even offer
solutions from the front lines. That
takes commitment on each person's
part, which comes from feeling part
of a team.
Supportive leadership
You, and your team of supervisors,
are responsible for addressing the
challenge of expanding the number
of employees who are energized and
engaged at work - and ultimately
reshaping your shop's culture. You
do that by demonstrating behavior
that inspires a trusting, caring
environment, and then establishing
that as the way you do business,
which encourages the rank-and-file to
adhere to the model, too.
It starts with ensuring your staff
feels respect and fairness, according
to the Educause Center for Applied
Research and Johns Hopkins
University. Caring leadership requires
selflessness, so when it comes to
making decisions that benefit only
the organization, or yourself, or the
individual, ensure all ties goes to the
employee. Understand, too, when to
make that compromise and balance
needs; one of the worst things a leader
can do is make decisions that ignore
the "little people," but when your
people see your effort to negotiate
those tradeoffs to their benefit, their
respect for you will grow.
