Long ago, pilots awakened
to the need for in-cabin,
in-cockpit communications
beyond acoustic tubes and
outright shouting. Today, there's
no reason for a small aircraft
to go without a system that
accommodates every seat - and
provides options for a variety
of input sources that leave the
pilot free from the beat, among
them portable, stand-alone,
and systems integrated into
audio-control panels and comm
radios themselves.

ong ago, Orville Wright made the first flight of
a powered, heavier-than-air craft at the foot of a
windswept sand dune in North Carolina. Through
three more demonstrations of the machine painstakingly researched and built with his brother, Wilbur, and
their engine mechanic, Charlie Taylor, the two brothers alternated pilot duties - and opened the era of flight in which we
remain today.
With only one seat and, at the time no radio, the only communications possible - talking face-to-face - became untenable the instant the powerplant's four cylinders fired up.
Fast forward a bit more than four years from that Dec. 17,
1903, milestone when the brothers returned to Kitty Hawk to
test their newest design.
Built to meet the requirements of a U.S. Army contract,
this new flyer was the first airplane built for two. After multiple test flights with sandbags substituting for a live passenger, each brother flew flights with a friend from Dayton seated
next to the pilot. So it was that Charley Furnas made history
as aviation's first passenger.
