LoPresti Aviation's BoomBeam 85-watt landing light allows
the pilot in this Cirrus to see more of the runway than with
the new factory LED lighting (inset photo).

In high intensity discharge lighting, the lamp is filled
with gas and metal salts. An electric arc between tungsten
electrodes heats and evaporates the salts forming plasma.
The reaction produces intense light with reduced power
consumption. The technology is used in automobiles,
underwater headlamps, commercial buildings, outdoor
areas and more.
"We were the first to bring high-performance HID
lighting to aviation," LoPresti said.
Where many types of lighting systems tend to fail due
to burnout, vibration, filament failure or simply a short
lifecycle, HID lighting's design reduces electrical load and
heat output and doesn't have a filament that can break,
thereby increasing reliability, according to LoPresti. The
lights are brighter, too, increasing range and safety.
LoPresti Aviation's systems, which include a five-

year, 5,000-hour warranty, are available for Citation,
Gulfstream, Falcon, Learjet, Beechjet, Hawker, King
Air, Baron and most piston aircraft. In November
2015, the company released its BoomBeam HID
lighting kit for Challenger and CRJ series aircraft.
"The first Challenger that we tackled is the
Challenger 300," LoPresti said. "The aircraft has
old-technology 50-watt HID lights with less than
desirable optics. We replaced them with our new
Dual Multi Light Array powered with our Next
Generation 170-watt BoomBeam HID lighting and
updated reflectors."
