original aircraft production, or forward-fit sales. Retrofit
sales, those involving new avionics equipment for installation aboard in-service aircraft, totaled 45.3 percent of firstquarter sales. Those sales were split roughly two-thirds for
North America (U.S. and Canada, 64.9 percent) and onethird (35.1 percent) for the rest of the worldwide business
and general aviation avionics market.
But those sales numbers actually were slightly lower
than for the same period in 2015. "It's disappointing that
total worldwide sales are off to a slower start compared
to the first three months a year ago," Derks said. "Sales
in the forward-fit market were nearly identical to last
year, so the overall decline was mostly felt in the retrofit
market. With more than 30 new avionics products and
services introduced to the market this week at the AEA
Convention, industry will hopefully see improved sales
figures later this year."

Awards
A $2 billion-a-year industry didn't get to that point overnight. In appreciation of industry participants, their success
and leadership, and their impact on shaping the contemporary
market for business and general aviation avionics, the AEA created its Lifetime Achievement Award. It's the highest honor
bestowed upon an individual by the AEA's board of directors.
The 2016 AEA Lifetime Achievement Award recipient is industry veteran Robert Duncan, who was named president of
the company his father had founded in 1956, Duncan Aviation,
only three years out of college at the age of 26. A nationally
recognized aviator, businessman, art collector and civic leader,
Duncan was instrumental in expanding the company from
its relatively small roots. Along the way, he changed its salesfocused operation to one offering a diverse array of services in
maintenance, modifications, avionics, accessories and instrument repairs.
