Plane sense
S

ometimes, you need plane sense. No, that's not
an error. Restated: sometimes, it makes sense
to purchase and use an airplane.
Kent McIntyre, the 2013 AEA Member of the Year,
took over Bevan-Rabell from Bob Patterson in 2001.
Ralph Bevan started Bevan Radio
and Rabell Electronics in 1954. The
companies merged in the 1960s
to form Bevan-Rabell, which has
been an AEA member since 1986.
Located at Wichita's Dwight D.
Eisenhower National Airport, the
company was known for doing
bench repairs for a large number of
other shops. McIntyre became shop
manager in 1989. Soon, he became involved in the AEA, getting
elected to the board of directors
during the first AEA convention he
attended.
After McIntyre purchased the company, BevanRabell expanded into airframe and engine maintenance.
The company services most general aviation aircraft.
Although the majority of its work is on piston twins and
singles, the company performs a lot of turbine and light
jet work. Still, the company does a significant amount
of avionics installations and bench repairs - employing
five technicians on the bench.

Today, the company is heavily involved in its local
community. For example, Bevan-Rabell has hosted students from Wichita Area Technical College's avionics
class. The company has received awards from Garmin
and S-Tec. Furthermore, Bevan-Rabell has been recognized by The Twin Cessna Flyer
magazine for outstanding avionics
panel design.
In addition to its website, Bevan-Rabell has a strong presence in social media. Examples of its work since 2012
can be seen on Facebook. In 2014, the
company joined Google Plus.
McIntyre started flying as a student in 1976, and he knows when it
makes sense to use an airplane for
business. By 2015, Bevan-Rabell
was doing a fair amount of remote
work. Technicians would travel to
Enid, Oklahoma, or Hutchinson, Kansas, to perform
recertifications or minor updates to systems. By car,
the trip to Enid is about two hours and about an hour to
Hutchinson. Travel by air would reduce travel time and
make scheduling easier.
As a result, McIntyre decided to purchase an airplane. In
March 2015, Bevan-Rabell purchased a 1968 Cessna 172K.
"What we constantly ran into were situations where
an airplane would make the schedule work," McIntyre
