said. "I've always encouraged everybody to learn to fly,
if they had any interest at all."
He considers the aircraft to be a good deal, since it
received new paint and a new interior just a few years
prior to the company's purchase.
"The airplane is older than most of the people flying
it," he noted.
Many are of the opinion that avionics technicians
should have some flying experience. Running an aircraft
on the ground or testing avionics on the bench, in the
hangar, and on the flight line, is in many ways, an artificial environment. Time in the pilot's seat gives technicians a deeper and better understanding of what pilots
are dealing with. For example, in flight, a localizer
indicator cannot be centered with the push of a button.
Instead, one must fly to the extended centerline of the
runway. Moreover, one must do so while paying attention to airspeed, attitude and altitude.
The company airplane is making sense, and it's working
well for its entire staff. Bevan-Rabell's customers appreciate
it, as well. The company has received good publicity because
of the aircraft, and it cuts road time and saves money on
overnight stays, even though the staff flies VFR only.
The Cessna also is available for employee use. Origi-
nally, McIntyre intended to charge his employees a rental
fee; however, as he added up the various costs, he found
they wouldn't save any money over renting elsewhere. So
he offered it for no charge except fuel.
Not surprisingly, the employees have been taking
advantage of this benefit. One started flight lessons in
March and was able to quickly earn his license. Other
employees have regained their currency. Some are working on their licenses, and two will start flying soon. In
addition to time saved on the road, avionics technicians
are able to build flight time.
Recently, the airplane was out of service, getting new
cylinders.
