Welcome to the brave new world of wireless-cockpit systems, a natural evolution of two disparate technologies, one
that links their capabilities and functions to form a wireless
data stream flowing in both directions. A wireless-cockpit network, if you will. And it's only part of a broader wireless revolution in general aviation cockpits.
From here to there
and back again
Wireless communications brought a revolution in how hundreds of millions of us work, play, live and interact with our world.
From cellphones to smartphones, iPads and Android tablets to
smart watches - all with micro-computing hardware and processing power - urban dwellers, in particular, increasingly shop, find
dining establishments, pick movies and book travel using wireless
connections to remote servers.
With that revolution going on
elsewhere, the arrival of wireless
interfaces for cockpit avionics
seemed inevitable. In the past five
years, it's arrived and expanded.
Now this is not about wireless
avionics intra-communications
that uses short-range, low-power
wireless communications to communicate between sensors and
activators and cockpit controllers
and indicators, while eliminating wires between those systems
and activators and indicators. The
goal: save weight, improve per-

formance and reduce wiring complexity. And we won't be surprised if future avionics connected remote avionics components to
panel displays of their functions - without wires connecting them.
But now, this is wireless intra-cockpit avionics systems, which
similarly eliminate hard-wired connections - and their wires - between portable devices that pilots use as EFBs and some installed
avionics systems. The goal: reduced workload, faster performance
and reduced opportunities for input errors; they all accompany
what is actually an expansion of EFB functionality.
The big boost in potential arrived in the form of a revolution in
personal computing with Apple's now ubiquitous iPad and the Android tablets that followed.
The earliest wireless-cockpit
interface incarnations came
from avionics makers for the
business- and airline-aircraft
segment. These companies developed wireless interfaces for
improving a routine maintenance chore by allowing their
cockpit systems to upload software updates from identified
network computers. This option
was solely a ground-based action when parked at their home
