But then, a maker of light general aviation avionics developed a
universal interface connection designed to let tablet computers connect with installed avionics; this opened the door to today's greatly
expanded range of wireless-cockpit interface options.
Aspen Avionics: enter the Connected cockpit
Aspen Avionics unveiled its ambitious Connected Panel cockpit package a few short years ago at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. As
with so many bleeding-edge ideas, the announcement generated
nearly as many questions as it provided answers.
Leading the stack of questions were the predictable ones: Why?
Isn't avionics operation simple enough to do without introducing a
new layer of technology into the cockpit?
It helped little that as of the announcement date, the foundational
piece of equipment wasn't yet shipping - and that outside the small
lineup of partners interested in developing ways to use the Connected Panel, little product existed - except within the imaginations
of the company staff, engineers and software developers.
But with both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity in Aspen's
CG100 wireless gateway, all it took was for someone to be first
with something worth using, however, and the wall began to crumble between the futurists and the relative avionics Luddites.
Aspen had its commitments from its first partners lined up at the
announcement, pending approval of the hardware and installation
approvals needed.
ForeFlight, AvConnect, BendixKing and others unveiled their
plans in parallel with Aspen's announcement. Aspen's Connected
Pilot, the first product for the Connected Panel line, offered the ability to tune radios and cross-file flight plans directly from an iPad to
BendixKing by Honeywell's KSN 770 Nav/Com/GPS.
ForeFlight promised a new version of ForeFlight Mobile written to function with Connected Pilot, allowing ForeFlight Mobile
users running Connected Pilot to create flight plans on their iPads
and wirelessly load them into the KSN 770 using ForeFlight's interface. The software includes an avenue to alter flight plans by
using either the installed GPS or iPad to synchronize wirelessly on
both the portable and panel-mounted equipment. Aspen designed
the cockpit interface to use its innovative Evolution flight displays
along with the iPad.
The Connected Pilot software allows easier radio tuning by
pushing radio frequencies on airport diagrams or charts directly
into the "standby" window of the radio's nav/comm. The pilot need
only toggle the radio frequency from "standby" to "active" to accept tuning input via the iPad.
Other functions include data logging aircraft performance fully
automated through Connected Pilot, thanks to its integration with

AvConnect - a comprehensive aircraft and pilot management application available for general aviation. The AvConnect iPad app
will automatically record pilot and aircraft data from installed systems and will then seamlessly create entries in the cloud-based portion of its application - simplifying aircraft and pilot record keeping requirements.
To say it "took off" from there would be like saying wireless
phones got popular from the launch of the first huge Motorola
handsets years ago. Wireless interfaces grew significantly, and the
systems available for adapting to those options also expanded.
Garmin Connext and Flight Stream

Given Garmin's dominance in light-aircraft panels, the announcement of the Connected Panel fed expectations that Garmin
would also develop its own wireless-cockpit systems, which became reality with Garmin Connext and the Flight Stream line of
wireless gateways to cockpit avionics.
The Flight Stream 110 and 210 Bluetooth gateways open the
connection to Garmin installed avionics via tablets running one
of several programs - Garmin Pilot, among them, of course, and
ForeFlight, one of the leading names in EFB software. Garmin
developed its Bluetooth gateway units to provide connectivity in
the cockpit through the company's Connext system; both provide
a link for information to flow from panel-mounted avionics to be
streamed to a portable tablet or smartphone through the Garmin
Pilot app - such as attitude information from the 210 or ADS-B In
data via one of Garmin's transponders.
The Flight Stream 110 connects with Garmin's GDL 88 ADS-B
or GDL 69 SiriusXM datalink units to stream GPS, weather and
traffic data up to two portable tablets or smartphones. Move up
to the Flight Stream 210 and you pick up additional capabilities -
such as streaming weather and traffic information between Garmin
GTN 650/750 and GNS 430W/530W all-in-one navigators/comm/
MFB boxes to tablet computers.
This link allows highly accurate AHRS information to the portable units from panel-mounted or remotely mounted sensors.
And, of course, there's the channel for wireless transmission and
transferring of flight-plan data between the panel-mounts and portables. Reference the start of the story, where we flight planned before lunch; well, the capability exists anywhere you open the tablet
or smartphone so you can input a flight plan at home, then load it
directly into the panel-mounted navigator. The process is as simple
as a couple of screen-button pushes, whether writing a new plan or
altering an existing one.
