approach procedures with LP minimums. About 7,000 business jets and turboprops also have WAAS receivers installed.
The widespread and growing availability of LPV and
LP procedures, and the high equipage rate in the general
aviation fleet, are enabling the FAA to retire some navigation aids from service, including nondirectional beacon
and VOR equipment. The FAA continues to decommission
ground-based NDBs.
Fuel technology
The NextGen Update: 2016 also features new efforts to reduce aviation's impact on the environment. The FAA is working with industry stakeholders to facilitate the development
of an unleaded replacement fuel for piston-powered aircraft.
The goal is to make available an unleaded fuel alternative to
general aviation operators by 2018, which could help support
the introduction of more environmentally friendly aircraft. In

2013, the FAA and industry trade associations established the
Piston Aviation Fuels Initiative steering group. This government-industry partnership is designed to facilitate collaboration on the development and deployment of a high-octane
fuel that will have the least impact on the existing piston engine aircraft fleet and fuel distribution system.
Based on the steering group's work, six fuel producers
proposed 17 fuel formulations for a two-phase PAFI test
program. Phase 1 laboratory, rig and preliminary engine
testing was completed in 2015. The FAA selected two unleaded fuels - one from Shell and one from Swift Fuels -
for testing at the FAA's William J. Hughes Technical Center
in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Phase 2 testing will generate
engine and aircraft test data that can be used for obtaining
authorization to operate engines and aircraft on the candidate fuels.
Phase 2 will begin in the summer of 2016, and vendors
will provide the fuels by mid-2016. Testing will conclude in
2018 and provide data to support fleet-wide fuel specifications and FAA approval. q
