Lorrie White of Banyan Air Service

Recently, Avionics News spoke with
Lorrie White to learn more about her
work as an avionics sales representative and life outside the office.

You are relatively new

ocated in Fort Lauderdale,
Florida, Banyan Air Service is a
24-hour, full-service fixed base
operation, with more than 1 million square feet of hangar and office
space within an 85-acre aviation complex. Banyan provides comprehensive
business aviation services, including ground services, aircraft sales,
heavy maintenance and interior
modifications, turbine engine service,
structural repairs, avionics installations and services, aircraft part sales,
the Jet Runway Café and the Banyan
Pilot Shop.

With...

Yes, I started in November
2015 as an avionics sales rep.
I write technical proposals to
retrofit aircraft with new avionics systems. We do everything
from full glass cockpits, ADS-B
solutions, Wi-Fi, entertainment
- everything. There is a lot of
research involved. I make sure
what I am proposing is going to
interface with existing equipment and is approved for that
particular aircraft. I work closely
with our inspector, engineer,
and install lead as well as vendors to stay informed on special
pricing for customers. I calculate
labor hours and other costs and
then get the final proposal to
the customer.

Where did you work
prior to Banyan?
I worked for Duncan Aviation in Fort
Lauderdale as an avionics technician.
Banyan's sales director found me on
LinkedIn and told me my background
would be perfect for sales. I had not
previously considered sales, but after
looking into it, I became interested.
It's been a perfect fit for me, and I'm
extremely happy in this position.

Where were you working
prior to Duncan Aviation?
I was a civilian contractor at Naval
Air Station Key West as an electronics
technician for the F-5 flight trainer for
the VFC-111 Sun Downers. They play
the role of adversary to the F/A-18s
and other military aircraft.
Was that your first job
out of the Navy?
My first job after the Navy was
with L-3 Communications as a civilian
contractor at Naval Station Mayport
in Jacksonville, Florida. I was an avionics technician for HSM-40s and
SH-60 Seahawks B and R.
What were you
like growing up?
I was a normal kid who dreamed
of being an astronaut. I loved playing
outside, riding my bike, roller skating and video games. Mostly growing up in Florida, my favorite game
was playing lifeguard and rescuing
my playmates in the pool or at the
beach. After graduating from high
school, I worked at a bank and then
a pharmacy while attending college
part time at night. I wanted to go to
pharmacy school and soon realized I
hated it after working as a pharmacy
technician for a few years. I didn't
know what I wanted to do, but after
the terrorist attacks on 9/11, I wanted
to serve my country any way I could.
That's when I joined the Navy as an
avionics tech. I actually wanted to
be in the medical field because of
my background, but there were no
positions left for females. Because
