the clock
Mastering the alphabet soup of time management to work more effectively
I
t always started the same way: In the midst of a
meeting, our boss would suggest a "why don't
we" idea, and assign each of us tasks to follow-up.
Dutifully, we'd march off afterward to complete our
assignments, but we'd never hear about it again, even
with prompting. Certainly, some of his ideas were good
and smart. One or two may have been game changers.
But none ever went anywhere. Eventually, we learned not
to bother spinning our wheels.
It's hard to say exactly what went wrong, other than
our boss was better at ideation than implementation. In
practical terms, he never made time to take concepts
through to fruition; he worked on his pet projects
to occasional conclusion, kept the business running
smoothly on what we've always done, and talked about
what we needed to do to move it forward. It seemed,
apparently, that there was never enough bandwidth to do
more.
Eventually, this lack of diligence caught up with him;
what should have required some agile pivots demanded
the turning of a huge ocean liner just to stay afloat.
That's the risk of loose time management.
Let's be honest. None of us can truly throw a stone

of criticism; we've all tried to fit 10 pounds of work
into a 5-pound day. And an avionics shop is a dynamic
place, so while you may strive to keep your obligations
with atomic-clock precision, that's not always what your
business needs to function.
Time management is the thread that runs through
almost all aspects of work - how you organize your
day, how you manage people and processes, how you
decide time to allocate to individual tasks, or how you
keep time-losing behavior to a minimum. You only
have so much time in a workweek. If you're chronically
extending those boundaries, you're setting yourself up
for burnout, frustration and even physical illness. That -
and the overtime you pay your people for inefficiencies
- extracts a real cost to your avionics shop.
For all your responsibilities, timekeeper is probably
least discussed, the hardest to master, yet the most
influential to your daily success. One model that
organizes all of this is "ABCDEFG." This alphabet soup
of an acronym proposes that time management comprises
seven factors to keep your workday on-track. The gist is
this: Beating the clock starts with knowing how you need
to use your time.
