ment. At that time, in-flight entertainment equipment was in the
early stages of development. "I migrated toward the IFE industry because of my interest in video processing," Baltra said.
The in-flight entertainment industry has changed in many
different ways in the last 30 years, starting with audio systems,
VHS tape players, overhead monitors and pull-down screens.
Today, network interfaces such as onboard Wi-Fi are extremely
common, as is high-speed satellite connectivity.
Baltra and Nishikawa believed these network interfaces
would become the standard for all equipment on board aircraft.
"An aircraft becomes future proof by deploying industry
network interface standards," Baltra said. "The airplane can integrate newer devices as they become available and is scalable
as the demand for digital data grows."
Baltra and Nishikawa started Sky Definition Aero Systems
in 2012 to develop 4K/UHD "smart" monitors that would connect directly with network systems, whether it was an onboard
server to stream movies, or an offboard system to browse the
web, or check email, news, weather and sports.
Most current technology is designed for 1080 pixel screen
resolution or less. Although this technology is in its infancy,
some estimate that by 2025, more than half the households

in the U.S. will have these displays. "We expect exponential
growth with the availability of 4K content," Baltra said.
Sky Definition offers to future proof aircraft by upgrading
now to the next generation of display technology. The technology offers what the company calls "exquisite clarity and detail
for a true life-like visual experience." The technology equals
that of movie theaters, and allows customers to stream movies
from Netflix, Amazon Prime, M-GO, Vudu and YouTube. The
displays can interface with 4K/UHD Blu-ray players, and can
upscale current HD source content to 4K/UHD.
Currently, the Sky Definition product lineup includes 24inch and 32-inch 4K/UHD monitors. Future products include
50-inch and 65-inch 4K/UHD monitors with high-dynamic
range and wide-color gamut. All monitors offered have 3840by-2160 resolution. Contrast ratios range from 1,000:1 for the
smallest monitor up to 5,000:1 for the 65-inch unit. Sky Definition's network display interface unit can transform an ordinary
monitor into a network monitor for live streaming. The 28
VDC unit weighs 5.5 pounds, is fanless, and has four input and
two output ports.
