What is your current
position at C&L
Aviation?
I am the avionics sales
manager, and I've been
here since July 2015, so
I'm relatively new with
this company.

Al Kinnamon of C&

C&L Aviation is a global aviation services and aftermarket-support provider
for regional and corporate aircraft specializing in quality parts, service, sales,
leasing, maintenance, aircraft refurbishment and aircraft remarketing.
The company strives to make aircraft
ownership more economical by providing all of its services in one location: a
state-of-the-art 120,000 square-foot
facility at Bangor International Airport
in Maine, where for more than 20
years, aircraft have been coming for
maintenance and inspections.
Recently, Avionics News spoke to
Al Kinnamon to learn about his work
at C&L Aviation and his life outside
the office.

With...

Where were you working
prior to C&L?
I was with PrivateSky in Fort
Myers, but I was still working
out of my house in Raleigh.
PrivateSky is a spinoff of
Gulfstream. About 14 years ago, a
bunch of folks went to Fort Myers
to take care of a customer who
had bought a GII, and it ended up
as an aftermarket maintenance
facility. I was the avionics sales
manager there for five years.
I've also worked for 14 years at
Gulfstream in Savannah, Georgia.
I was the first electronic technical
person in tech ops in 1985, and
now I believe they have 125. I ran
the service center in Savannah
for eight years. I left Gulfstream
to go into sales with EMS Satcom
in Ottawa, Canada.
I enjoyed my time with EMS.
We used to have annual sales
meetings in January, of course,
where we'd play golf in 2 feet of
snow. I even learned how to play
hockey. I grew up in Delaware, so
I knew how to ice skate.

How did you get
involved in avionics?
During high school, I joined the Naval
Reserves, and then went into active
duty in 1964 as a sonar technician in
submarines. I went out of active duty
in 1966 and went to work for Boeing
Vertol, working on Chinooks and Sea
Kings. At that time, the word avionics
didn't exist - it was electronic systems.
I got laid off twice, and one day, I was
driving past Wilmington Airport and
saw Atlantic Aviation and a sign saying
the company was hiring. I was hired
and did bench work and engineering
work, and aircraft systems work primarily on GIs, GIIs and Hawkers. In 1974,
I was offered a promotion to go to
Houston to open the FBO avionics shop
at Hobby Airport. I did that for five
years, so I had 10 years total at Atlantic.
I wanted a job with more involvement in avionics systems upgrades,
and my wife and I had recently sold
everything we had and bought a
50-foot ketch-rigged sailboat. We sailed
it across the Gulf of Mexico from Fort
Lauderdale to Houston, through Key
West and the Dry Tortugas. We lived on
the boat for about six months. I got an
offer for a job with Rockwell Collins in
Melbourne, Florida, and we were going
to sail back to Florida.
How was life on the sailboat?
We loved it, but we had one scary
adventure going back to Florida when we
sailed through Tropical Storm Claudette.
Our sails and rigging were damaged, our
mast was in the water, and that ain't
cool in a sailboat. We came upon Texaco
Connecticut, an oil tanker that gave us
