fuel. We were in 20-foot seas, and we
radioed them that we needed help. They
turned the tanker around and gave us
fuel in 5 gallon cans. When they asked if
we needed anything else, my wife said,
"See if they have any ice cream." Can
you believe it? I told them that my first
mate wants ice cream, so they gave us a
steel bucket of butter pecan. By virtue of
the fact that my boat was a documented
yacht, I gave the skipper my documentation number. Since they had rendered
assistance to a documented yacht, the
taxpayers paid for the entire fuel bill for
the tanker from Saudi Arabia to Houston.
What's a typical day
for you now?
I work out of a home office. I start
the day by contacting customers about
avionics sales and quoting prices. I
formally type all the quotes and make
sure that what's in the airplane will
work with what we want to add. We
have an avionics integration engineering group, so I get the whole package
put together. From time to time, I travel to see the customer - most of the
time I've already seen the airplane.
Most of my day is spent on the phone.
Are you a pilot?
Yes, I soloed in 1969 when I worked
for Atlantic. I always say I learned to
fly out of self-defense. I did a lot of
flying between the seats during test
flights, and on one flight, the co-pilot
got food poisoning. I asked, "Did both
of you eat the same thing for lunch?"
I figured if both pilots had gotten sick
and we were tooling along at 35,000
feet, I'd be in trouble. I'm not current

anymore, but I've flown a lot of different airplanes over the years.

Do you have any pets?
We have 12 cats in the house.

What do you do for fun?
I'm a ham radio operator. I have a
unit in my car, one at my house, and I
have a big antenna. I'm WA3JJG. I talk
to people all over the world. Every
night at 9 p.m., I check into an ARES
(Amateur Radio Emergency Service)
net to make sure the equipment is
functioning and to shoot the breeze
or what we ham operators call "rag
chew." We help with communications
during emergency conditions, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, etc. I've had
my license since 1966.
In addition, I read everything. I
would be lost without my Kindle. I
bought one because it was too much
on an airplane to carry books, so I
bought a Kindle Fire. My wife is an
avid reader, as well. We have 900
books online in our account, so I'm
never hurt for a book. I like science
fiction, military history, Civil War history, but I'll read anything.

Twelve cats?
It's hard to explain. We started
with three cats. Then, my daughter
found a little gray cat with a black
kitten along the side of the road. The
next night, she found another black
kitten in the same place. Our grandson came home with a Bengal he
found in a field. We found another
one near a dumpster at McDonald's.
All the cats come to us sickly, so we
take them to the vet and get them
healthy. Cats just weasel their way
into our hearts.
We also have a black lab named
Lady whom we also rescued. She
gets along famously with all the cats
except for the Bengal. So yes, we
have pets.

Tell me about your family.
My wife, Barbara, and I have been
married 43 years. We have two children, ages 46 and 48, and four grandchildren - ages 7 to 22. Three of
the grandchildren live in the Raleigh
area, and one is in Pennsylvania. My
son just got back into aviation. He
was in the Marines, and now he is
into ground services in Philadelphia.
I also am a 32nd degree Mason. My
home lodge is Hiram Lodge No. 25 in
Newark, Delaware; my 32nd degree is
with the Scottish Rite in Savannah.

What do you see
for the future?
Our facility in Bangor is 120,000
square feet, and we have 150 people
working for the company. We are
open 24/7/365 with two shifts.
Bangor is next to U.S. Customs, so
people have to stop. We support
a lot of airlines and military equipment. We are regularly involved with
commuter airlines, and we're evolving into corporate aviation, which is
why I was hired. I'll be 71 this year
and still having fun. Like most of the
guys and gals I know in this business,
we have jet fuel in our blood. q
